Our History.

Don Conroy’s unselfish service to Babylon Village began early in his life. During World War II, Boy Scout Don helped collect scrap metal, rubber and newspapers for the war effort. While attending Babylon High School, Don wrote the sports column for the Babylon Leader.

He volunteered for the United States Navy and served aboard the Destroyer USS Timbermann. Don returned home to serve as a police officer, volunteer fire fighter, becoming chief of the Babylon Fire Department and member of the rescue squad. He visited the sick in hospitals and their homes. Don comforted families and friends at wakes and funerals. Hospice benefited from his fund raising efforts. During the summers, many families awakened to find a bag of Don’s home grown tomatoes on their doorstep.

He could be found all over the Village: cleaning tables at the Lions Pancake Breakfast, working at the hot dog stand at the Village Fair, working on the chain gang at high school football games, cooking meals at the fire house, raising money for the Salvation Army as a Christmas Bell Ringer... this was the unselfish spirit of service exemplified by Don Conroy.

You can see Don’s fingerprints all around the Village. Under his leadership as mayor, he accomplished much: the September 11th Memorial Garden, the golf course, the expansion of the Village pool, the revitalization of the train station and the expansion and beautification of the business district, to name a few. He prided himself in being involved with all the organizations that have generously donated much to enhance the Village. Don’s vision was simple: he wanted Babylon Village to be a wonderful place to live and a great place to work . . . and through his tireless efforts, he accomplished just that.
